Anthem of the Seas Day-11 (2024)

 May 8th, 2024 (Day 11)

Today, we had to get up earlier than usual due to a mandatory immigration process for the U.K. Border and security service.

We again ate in the Windjammer and enjoyed the morning meal.

We then made our way from deck 14 to where they had the immigration team set up on deck 3 in the main dining room.  The team of three personnel boarded the day prior, and basically, it was the U.K.'s version of customs. The line wound through the dining room and out into the casino. The line moved rather quickly, and overall, we were in line for about 20 minutes.

We then hurried off to the "Captain's Corner" Event, where the Captain and the Director of Hotel Operations for the ship answered questions from the guests for over 90 minutes.  The event was only scheduled for 45 minutes and everyone was very pleasant.  It was definitely a treat to get the longer time.

Some of the info from the Q & A:

Q: What was the cost in fuel for the medical diversion to Porta Delgada?
A: 200 Metric Tonnes in fuel, or 52,834 gallons of fuel.

Q: Does the patient have to pay for the added fuel or port fees?
A: No, the patient does not have to pay for the fuel or port fees but will be responsible for medical charges.

Q: Does the ship recycle everything?
A: The ship recycles as much as possible and transfers it to the nearest port. The remaining trash is burned in the incinerator on board. Anthem of the Seas is a "Zero Landfill Ship."

Q: Where do you put people that are "bad" or need to be locked up?
A: Anthem of the Seas has 2 brigs onboard, basically mattresses on the floor in cells.

Q: Why do ships use Knots vs. mph or kph?
A: 1 knot = 1 minute of latitude per hour at the equator. This works best for navigating across oceans because a nautical mile is equal to one minute of longitude at the equator. If you know your speed and can measure time, you can have a pretty good idea of how far you've traveled.

Q: Due to the conflict in Israel, will there be any cruises going through the Suez Canal?
A: Due to the conflict, there will not be any cruise ships traversing the Suez Canal, at least for this year. The ships that need to reposition will travel around the Horn of Africa with only crew onboard, no passengers.

I asked about the LED panels out on the pool deck, "do they have replacement panels", seeing how it seems to be a problem that plagues the ships across the fleet, with panels that have bad pixels.

The answer was, "Yes, they have spare panels, but it is a bit of an operation since it cannot be done while at sea, only in port."

After Captain's Corner, we had someone meet us as we were exiting the TWO70 club and mentioned that they do a light show for Christmas too and heard me mention that when I asked my question.

We talked with Chris Woodward from the U.K. for an hour, chatting about our light shows and the Mini at Sea. It was a pleasure to meet someone with the same hobby on a cruise ship, and it was also such a unique sailing.

We then headed to the Royal Theater, where we watched the crew of the Anthem put on a talent show. Seeing the crew having fun and showing off their talents was great.  (I'll upload the video when I get back home)

Afterward, we returned to our cabin to relax and then get ready for dinner. Dinner was in the main dining room, and it was "Royal Night," where they served lobster. We didn't get any, but it's a very popular meal on the ship. They only serve it once per sailing at no cost; otherwise, there is a $19.99 upcharge for lobster.

After dinner, we went to the Solarium to enjoy the hot tubs.  We stopped for a drink and then enjoyed the hot tubs for over an hour.  The hot tubs are very clean, and the water is recycled several times an hour.

One of our favorite drinks to have is "Chared Pineapple"

We then retired at about 10pm for the night. With tomorrow being a port day and the fact that we don't have an excursion planned, we were going to sleep in a bit and let all the people who need to rush off at 8am get to the Windjammer first.
